We returned here for our 4th year. It's still as good if not better than it ever was. We went on Tue. and it was Taco Tue. special. So we ordered the tacos. You get three tacos with your choice of meat and you can mIx or match the meats. We got pork, fish and beef all for $6.99. It does not get much better.

Just finished a wonderful dinner with my family. The food was great and the service was awesome. Monday's and Wednesday's for dinner kids eat free. So Ya we will definitely be coming back here again.
(5)Ellen P.
Hands down best barbecue in the area. The loaded potato skins, sweet potato soufflé, and brisket are a few of my favorites. But I haven't had one thing I haven't liked.
(5)Lance W.
Great atmosphere and very clean. The food was excellent, as were the portion sizes. The waitresses were friendly and very attentive. There's outdoor seating which is very nice. Definitely recommend this place of you're in the area. :)
(5)Silvia E.
Great food vegatables were excellent. Driving through the area and came upon it. I wish I lived closer Miami is a long dfive.
(5)Max S.
Lunch included a good smoke meat nacho appetizer. I also had their shrimp and grits and was not a fan. Maybe I expected Magnolia's in Charleston or B Matthews is savanna but far from it. The hush puppies are normally awesome but too greasy today. I've had plenty of good meals here and will again soon.

Excellent BBQ! Short wait at lunch rush. We had 1/2 rack of ribs and chopped pork. Both were really good and even better with tangy original bbq sauce or the sweet bbq sauce. Also had fried okra and green beans which were delicious!
(5)Ginger L.
My husband and I both thought the chopped brisket and chopped pork were great. My son loved the turkey and rolls. I enjoyed the okra. Probably wouldnt order green beans again--pretty sure they were canned and lacked bacon or ham. Baked beans and mac-n-chreese were pretty good. Server was spot on (Jessica). Pleasant atmosphere. Convenient to highway. We will be back again when traveling through Plant City. Glad we found Grandpa Johnson's on Yelp.

Hey... This place just rocks. Little dust here and there as I posted in a prior review but the food is great, staff is friendly, and this is a place I bring all out of town guests. Ribs are surprisingly good considering how they bring them out. BBQ sauce is good (try the sweet). I bought some for a family get together back in Indiana. Was a hit.

I'm from Texas so I like my bar b que. A friend of mine took me here. Very crowded at lunch. Good sign. Was going to go for the que but then I saw the smoked/fried chicken. How could I pass that up. Half bird done my two favorite ways? Yummmmm. It was crisp outside and smoky and moist inside. I'm in heaven. Sides, potato salad and green beans, were okay but not great. Waitress never even cracked a smile but she kept our glasses filled. Would I go back? You bet. Maybe try the bar b que next time.
(4)Joanne B.
Read the reviews and decided to try it. The service was great, sweet girl very attentive. We had the blue cheese chips and a brisket sandwich. Both were very good.
(5)Joe Q.
BOGO Taco Tuesday is a great deal, the brisket tacos are my favorite but all of them are good. The staff is great, very friendly you are greeted by everyone not just your server. It's less than 5 minutes south of I-4 so well worth checking out if you happen to be driving through Plant City. Highly recommend!
(5)Abby A.
Can you say Taco Tuesday? This place is awesome, best BBQ ever put in my mouth! They have a great deal for the awesome tacos every Tuesday and we love meeting out family there. Will be back, for sure!!!
(5)Brett B.
Great place!!!! Gotta try the ribs... And the brisket nachos are awesome. This place is worth the drive.. no matter where you're coming from.
(5)John T.
I really like the bbq and the sides- a really good, family style bbq place. Good pork, ribs, beans, and my favorite, the sweet potato souffle. Reasonable prices. You can't go wrong. I would add a 1/2 point if I could.
(3)Galina K.
Best BBQ place! Food is very good. Had company of 3 and each ordered something different and everything turned out very good!
(5)Edward C.
So, I'm meeting a friend and it was their idea to go to Grandpa Johnson's. They apparently had been there numerous times. I am a HUGE BBQ fan so I was all for it. There were actually 3 of us eating and we all ordered the same thing: Ribs, mac & cheese and fries. The fries were a basic steak fry. A little seasoning but nothing to write home about. The mac & cheese was really good. Not the drippy gooey cheese but more like the mac & cheese like grandma use to make. As far as the ribs go.....they were OK. All I can say is I've had worse and I've had better. I tried the sweet sauce and that was alright as well. The price wasn't too bad. $42 for all three of us and that included beverages. I would go back again but it wouldn't be my first choice for a BBQ place. If your not overly fussy then try this place.

OMG OMG OMG My husband took me here for the first time last week and I am in LOVE!!! We started with the brisket topped potato skins which were to die for. Couldn't eat them all though.....took them home with us for a later snack! I ordered the brisket tacos and they were the best tacos I have ever had in my life! The brisket was smoked just right and the served it with grilled onions and all the typical taco toppings. My husband ordered the smoked turkey plate and it was also divine! The turkey was juicy and had just the right amount of smoke flavor. Even the french fries and mac-n-cheese were awesome! Our waitress was also awesome. She filled our sweet tea so much that we had to start saying no more please. I will definitely be returning! It is 45 mins away from my house but well worth the trip. If you find yourself in Plant City please go try this place! You will not regret it!
(5)Rachael D.
We ordered to go 1lb brisket and baked beans! It's was excellent.... Tried to return on a Saturday to order same thing and they were sold out .... So arrive early....

I tried Johnson's BBQ for the first time in probably 4 years. I was expecting a quality product, but what I received left me wanting more. The meat is the most important. I ordered brisket and ribs dinner. The brisket was absolutely dry and hard, with little smokey flavor, no bark, and needed BBQ sauce to get it down, which is a no-no. The ribs were far too done, almost stringy and hard, and offered little meat. No bark here either, but the flavor was well balanced. My dinner came with two sides and a roll, however I did not receive a roll. Green beans were good, but the best part of the meal was the sweet potato soufflé. But when a side is the best thing at a BBQ joint, there is something wrong.
(2)Amado N.
Amazing Brisket...my wife had shrimp n grits she loved it...onion rings to die for...excellent service...you will love it.
(5)Donya B.
Food is good as always. Ours was a take out order. My son got the pulled pork sandwich and loved it, husband ordered the brisket, fries and collards loved it, I ordered the dinner portion of the st Louis ribs supposedly a half rack, waffles fries & mac and cheese with the intention of sharing it. A half rack was 4 ribs and the waffle fries were no where to be found. Upon calling Grandpa Johnson's I was told they had run out of waffle fries and the girl was suppose to ask what I wanted in there place.... told I could drive back to get my other side or get a free side the next time I come in, Not especially happy with their customer service.
(3)Teresa V.
This was my first time and I had a salad. It wasn't bad but next time I will try the bbq. The service was great.
(3)Angela N.
This place is good. Order the brisket. Sometimes the food does not come out hot but more warm (like it has been sitting awhile). Sometimes a lot of flies swirl around from the opening of the door. It's annoying. the lemonade is good. My friends ordered the salad and really liked it.
(3)Gerald R.
Great healthy salad with pulled pled Turkey. Watch out Brooklyn Bridge. The nurses on 4 north will be making orders soon.
(5)Matt B.
4* for the Q and the sides, only 2.5* for the service. Very tasty brisket and pork, and delicious sweet potato casserole so sweet I had to save some for dessert. The selection of sauces is a nice touch, but they weren't labeled/ID'd so that visitors know which is how and which is not. They have been in business for 50 years, that also says a lot about what they do.
(4)Jim N.
I wish I could split my review - the food was fantastic, the service not so much. Johnson's was highly recommended to us and the chopped pork bbq and sides lived up to the hype. Unfortunately our waitress delivered our food and disappeared never to be seen again... we finally flagged down another after sitting with empty drinks most of the meal. Hope this is an aberration, because I do love good bbq.

Most people don't go to Florida for the barbeques. But while in Plant City, I noticed this town boasted several barbeques, reminded me that while Florida did not really participate in the war between the states, it is still the South. Came in with two other people and menu was on a newspaper type format. The menu was very straightforward and basic as good barbeque should be. Chicken, beef, pork , sausage and ribs. I had BBQed Beef sandwich, the others had pulled pork. Also an order of ribs to share between the three of us. My beef sandwich was good, nice smokey flavor and tender. The sauce complemented the meat but did not overwelm it like some sauces do....had a bit of bite to it, like tabasco. The ribs were very good too, meaty, not gristly like some places. Side of cole slaw and onion rings were likewise good. This is a pretty good place to eat, they have a new restaurant/eating area so you don't have to eat outside, sweat and shoo away flies anymore. Only thing that keeps me from giving this place a five star is the sauce. It was too understated for my taste but I'm sure a lot of people would think this is great.
(4)Eric W.
Service was great and friendly. I had the smoked fried chicken with baked beans and apple coleslaw. The chicken was good, but very greasy. Was expecting more of a honey flavor since it was drizzled with honey. The beans were good but I have had better. The coleslaw was average. The meal also came with a roll which was awesome. My wife had the shredded pork shoulder with creamed corn and sweet potato suffer. All were very good. BBQ sauce was good. No variety of sauces.
(4)Nancy E.
Not sure if this is called Johnsons, Granpa Johnson's, Freds.... The food was excellent. I had chopped pork shoulder with fried okra and collards. My daughter had the chicken BLT sandwich. Both were good. The only thing that wasn't good was the service. We arrived at 11:30 to a less than smiling host, a cold waitress and just ok service. The food was the star here. I asked to see a dessert menu and was told they don't have one, but the waitress rattled off strawberry shortcake, peach cobbler and maybe some pies. I skipped dessert. I asked for a togo menu and was told they didn't have any. The waitress gave me a card with their email address. I told her I was ordering now, so I have to go on my iPhone and look at the menu? I was shocked when she said yes. Well.. I paid for lunch and went up to the counter where they were friendlier. Ordered 1lb of chopped pork shoulder and went on my merry way. If you go, eat it in your car or take it home. It looks like the place does well and I'm sure it is because of the food, not the service.
(3)Amber M.
This restaurant is so good! The food is awesome! It is perfect combination of classic southern with a modern twist. Highly recommend the shrimp and grits, fried summer squash and creamed corn with bacon are just a few of my favorites!
(5)Gaetano P.
The sides taste like they all were just poured out of a can, especially the beans. The fries are just your common frozen fries and the Mac & cheese. Not sure what that was all about. The noodles are elbows with a water cheese sauce that doesn't stick to the noodles at all. They just sit floating with this greasy water cheese puddle underneath. My 3 year old wouldn't eat it at all. We tried all the meats. The brisket meat was like flavorless bubblegum and the pork was just ok. The chopped pork was pretty dry. The best thing was the smoked turkey. That turkey was pretty good. That's why I gave them 2 stars instead of 1. Service was fine no complaints there.
(2)Kori Y.
Wow! Go on Friday night for steak night. A great steak prepared perfectly. Any other time the other BBQ is as good as it gets. I love the brisket and the sweet potato souffle.
(5)Kenny D.
Awesome place for BBQ. I've lived all my life, and it's a great food and staff. 5 stars!!!
(5)Deb V.
Excellent restaurant! Awesome service, food is always great, and prices are reasonable! We eat here at least once a week!
(5)Michael D.
Just tried this place for the first time last week. What was I waiting for?! Great food, great service, clean place.
(5)Matthew S.
Not great but solid food. Service was ok. The belly buster sandwich was much better than the salad we ordered.
(3)Kristy W.
Awesome food and great service, portions were nice size. Knew it had to a great place with the amount of people waiting but it was worth the wait!!! Can't wait to go back, best BBQ :))
(5)Darlene W.
The real deal fo bbq, after living in Georgia. all round excellent, chicken and pork, collards, sweet potato souflee and Mac and cheese. prices reasonable, good portions and lovely servers in an immaculate setting. lucked out Wednesday night kids eat free! Closed on Sundays. packed at lunch, but worth it.
(5)Megan S.
Really good bbq!! They have very good brisket, and I really enjoyed my creamed corn. The macaroni and cheese was really good, but I like mine a little bit creamier. My friend really enjoyed his ribs-not fall off the bone, but I feel like that's normal for St. Louis ribs. He said they were delicious. There are 2 types of BBQ sauce on the table, and I preferred the original as it was a bit spicier. Service was great and friendly. Would eat here again in a heartbeat.
(5)Mae S.
Amazing atmosphere. Went for lunch the other day around 11am and it was already packed. As soon as I got my food I could see why. I ordered the BBQ'd Chicken with a side of salad and waffle fries. The chicken was amazing. The only thing I didn't absolutely love was the roll - too sweet. The food did take awhile so you might need to give yourself more then an hour for lunch especially between 11-1.
(5)Bob C.
Great onion rings. Overall great value. BBQ is great, a sweet place. No airs here! Worth a visit, but barely 4 stars for me.
(4)Bill G.
Down Home local place serving great Barbeque for two generations. Next door to Fred's Marketplace and owned by the same family. Pulled pork is better than the brisket.
(3)Toni G.
Hands down best BBQ! I live down the street so my husband and I are in here quite often. You will not be disappointed!
(5)Rich D.
Grandpa Johnson's is a good, solid choice for BBQ if you're in the area. I try to stop in every time I'm driving to Orlando, and as another person mentioned, I prefer it to First Choice as well. They have a large dining area that can handle good size crowds, but fortunately I've avoided the busy times during my visits. The wait staff is super friendly and helpful, and have always checked in regularly for refills and anything else I need. I usually get either the chopped pork or sliced brisket, and have always had good results. The meat is consistently cooked and seasoned well. They have a nice selection of sides, and usually get baked beans and mac n' cheese which are both tasty. One thing that often gets overlooked on Johnson's menu is the fairly large selection of items outside of BBQ. They have a nice selection of steaks, fish, sandwiches, and even Tex-Mex style tacos. Considering you can get them with chopped beef brisket and pulled chicken, you can get that great wood-smoked flavor with a touch of Mexican mixed in. Or even grouper or shrimp tacos which is a nice touch. Prices are reasonable with most all of the dinners priced from $8-11, which is a good value for the quality. While the BBQ stands on it's own dry, Johnson's offers their own BBQ sauce for dipping or covering. I find it quite good, and often buy a mason jar of it to bring home. Atmosphere: 4 Service: 5 Food: 4 Value: 5

Delicious! Servings were generous and the food was good. We had the brisket, shrimp n grits, b chic l-t the greens and the grits and tomatoes. The grits and tomatoes were excellent. Nice atmosphere too - homey. B-Chicken L-T had sooo much bacon!
(4)Ryan N.
The sweet potato soufflé was incredible. The BBQ was great, not incredible or fantastic, but very good. Service was outstanding and it was a nice homey environment.

Moving from Nashville to Florida a year ago, this little gem of a place came on my radar and my Que-cravings have been satiated! Well, I've only been twice but it's great food at terrific prices. I've had the ribs and brisket (chopped), the sweet potato souffle (which is to die for) and the biggest stack o' onion rings you've ever seen as a starter. Thankfully there were four of us to kill them. Hubby's had the shrimp and grits both times and loves it. I love the down home ambience. Note to those who'd like to kick back with a beer: It's on state property and is not allowed to serve alcohol. Some might find that offputting. I found it quaint and the homemade Lemonade quenched my thirst just fine. One suggestion to new visitors: the chopped brisket is pretty greasy. Next time I'm ordering the sliced.
(4)William G.
Great BBQ in Plant City. Located next to Fred's Counrty Kitchen, and owned by the same family, a staple in Plant City for a couple of generations. Expect to wait in line if you arrive at noon or 5:00 PM, it's that good. We exit I-4 at Plant City and stop at Fred's or Johnson's when ever we pass by - it is only a 2 or 3 minute detour.
(4)Luke H.
The quality of meats here is top notch. BBQ sauce is loved by some and hated by some, which is par for the course with all types of BBQ. If you like big sweet BBQ sauce, then this place will disappoint. If you like a clean, quality BBQ experience with Southern side dishes that are amazing, then Grandpa Johnson's will keep you coming back. I recommend it for a lunch along with a newspaper...the meals are big, so grab a paper, watch some tv, enjoy the polite/good looking staff, and stay awhile. Just have your Tide stick in the car.
(4)Joshua S.
The BBQ here is not really all that great... The flavors are a little understated and bland and there are definitely better bbq places in the Tampa Bay area... Go to First Choice not too far away; it's a good bit better, to be honest. If I do go here, it's for the chophouse salad with the smoked turkey, which is probably the only exception to my previous statement. The sides are to die for though, especially the greens. Overall though, nothing to rave about.

Forget the big city franchise BBQ joints and make a short drive to Johnson's in Plant City, FL. I just happened to catch a glimpse of their sign off of I-4 westbound and have to give them a try. BOY was I glad I did. From the moment you enter, a friendly hostess greets you and seats you. Then I was promptly greeted again by my server, Brittany who followed up with exceptional service for the entire visit. The brisket is amazingly tender, great smoky flavor, and mouth watering juicy. The ribs were fantastic too and really so flavorful there isn't a need to add sauce. The collard greens are FRESH as well as the freshly baked rolls. My only regret was that the bbq beans lacked any meat content... a hint that I hope the kitchen picks up on. Very clean, friendly, comfortable environment. Portions were good and price made it very appealing. They also have lunch specials with beverage for just $5. The place was packed so you may have a short wait or you can hit the drive up window if you are in a rush. If you are a BBQ fanatic you have to try this place!

I lived in Texas for a few years before coming to Florida. When I first got here, I was having severe withdrawals for good barbecue. One day, we were driving through Plant City and noticed this place. I was kind of afraid to try it after the bad experiences I'd had with other barbecue places in Florida, but I sure was glad I decided to give it a shot! The brisket is as close to Texas brisket as you could possibly find in this state. When I inquired about how they got it so close to the real thing, I found out that the owner spent months in Texas studying how to do brisket correctly. The barbecue sauce isn't nearly as good as Texas, but we were tipped off to the fact that you can have them bring out the sauce they usually only use on their ribs and use it as a substitute barbecue sauce, and it really fit the bill. They have a huge variety of sides to choose from as well. Their baked potatoes are huge, and the apple coleslaw is a tasty alternative to your normal everyday coleslaw. The wait staff is also mostly friendly and attentive. Prices are great-$7.99 for a brisket plate with a full half-pound of meat. You will not leave this place hungry on your hungriest day!
(5)Kimberly H.
I am from Texas. And in a pinch it will do. No one here in FL seems to get what real brisket is. I will say their's works for a temporary fix. My husband raves about the smokey bbq wings and banana pudding . It won't disappoint.
(3)Chuck W.
Arrived at 11:30 AM on a Thursday and decided on their brisket plate. I made a point of telling my waitress that I wanted it "Moist..not dry" and that's what I got. Five or six thin strips from the cap of the brisket. It was very moist and flavorful. However next time, now that I have confidence in the place, I'd just asking for the brisket. The cap meat is a bit too fatty. But, this was my mistake. I had the recommended slaw and that did not disappoint. It was very good. My second side was their baked mac and cheese and it, too, was very good. I liked both sauce offerings. Prices were about what you expect and portions very good. The service was excellent. The place was clean and by noon all seats were taken in their very nice dining room. You can also line up to take out and they are now open on Sundays from 11 to 3. I'd definitely return.
(4)Ron R.
The best barbecue in Hillsborough County. Far better than First Choice for a better price. If you are hungry, the combination plates are for you. For those lighter appetites, the Chop House Salad is great.
